Breast augmentation, a medical prosthesis, is used to correct the size and shape of a woman s breasts. The process, medically called augmentation mammoplasty, falls under cosmetic surgery. There are three common types of breast implant devices. They are saline, silicone, and composite (defined according to filler materials).
The first type namely saline implant contains an elastomer silicone shell filled with sterile saline solution.
The second type called silicone implant has an elastomer silicone shell filled with viscous silicone gel. In this method an incision is made under the breast (inframammary area). Then the implant-material is inserted and positioned. And finally the pocket closed. Positioning of implants basically may be of four kinds:
i) Subglandular
ii) Subfascial
iii) Subpectoral
iv) Sub muscular
Other incisions may also be used i.e. periareolar(surrounding the areola), axillary(at under arms). The incision is very small and generally fades out with time. This method has become the most popular.
The third type called alternative composition implants featured miscellaneous fillers, such as soy oil and polypropylene string.
